I grew up in Munich, and some of my earliest travel memories are family vacations around Europe.
We traveled mostly independently, staying in vacation rentals or small hotels rather than large resorts. Our trips often combined time at the beach with sightseeing and exploring whatever was around us.
And food was always part of the experience. We ate in local restaurants, shopped in local supermarkets, and cooked some of our own meals. One rule was pretty consistent: when we were traveling, we weren't looking for German food.
We wanted to experience where we were.
Italy became one of the countries I returned to most often, but our travels also took us through France, England, Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg, and beyond. Even now, I rarely want to visit exactly the same place twice. There's always somewhere new to discover.
